Your septic tank depends on healthy bacteria to keep it functioning properly
As a Plumber for many years we’ve seen a few things
Nothing is more dangerous to your septic system than putting in things that don’t belong there, certainly some items are worse than others
The 3 worst things to put in your septic system:
1. Grease. Your mom said never to pour grease down the drain and she was right! you will end up clogging up your drain which means nothing will be able to get through
2. Anything other than waste and toilet paper into your toilet. You would be surprised by the types of things we have seen toss down the toilet. A good rule of thumb- a toilet isn’t a garbage can.
3. Hazardous chemicals. If you toss these down the drain you will be killing off all the good bacteria that help to break down waste and keep your system running the way it should.
Question I am thinking of getting a water softener can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages and how does it work?
A-1 Plumbing – without getting too technical
Hard water is formed by when water infiltrates through deposits of limestone and chalk which are largely made up of calcium and magnesium carbonates.
And as you know we have plenty of limestone here at the lake making the water here to be higher on the hardness scale
Let me explain…
Plumbing- soft water can extend the life of your plumbing and avoid costly pluming repairs down the road. Bad for us but good for you
Better for the environment– you will use less cleaning supplies, less scrubbing and less chemicals down the drain and into the soil
Cost effective- save your appliances from your coffee maker to washing machine to the hot water heater -soft water can prevent the buildup of lime meaning they will run more efficiently
Healthier skin- soft water can soften your skin and hair by removing the hard minerals that cling using hard water
According to the University of Kentucky, drinking soft water can be harmful to individuals that are sensitive sodium levels. These include diabetics or those with high blood pressure.
The sodium level is typically much higher in soft water.
Plants can be extraordinarily sensitive to sodium levels
Soft water cannot be safely used in aquariums.
Fish require very strict pH levels to remain healthy in their environment,
If you own a septic system, you should consider the additional load on your drainage field from backwashing and regeneration.
the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. You however may need a separate source for drinking water and plants. We can always run a frost free faucet for watering and a bypass for just drinking water.
The illustration above shows how a typical water conditioner works
More than just outlets, we tackle larger project too

There’s no need to water grass in February
Waking up on a cold morning only to find no hot water can make for a bad start of the day
The holiday season might be over, but your kitchen sink’s drain probably doesn’t think so. It may be slow with left overs that have been hanging on as hard as the 5 lbs. you gained during the holidays. .
